ACE Mentors Graduation

ACE Mentors Graduation

This month held the ACE Mentors Graduation for Inland Chapter Student Class of 2018! Students across the Inland Empire from Eisenhower, Santiago, Chaffey, and Martin Luther King High Schools came together and showcased this year’s design projects.

The ACE Mentor Program of America is a national organization established to mentor high school students and inspire them to pursue careers in architecture, construction, and engineering (ACE).  Each year, students learn about the building process by working through a design project with industry professional volunteers. Designs can be submitted national for competition. Students who participate can also receive scholarships if they pursue industry related degrees. The Inland Empire chapter just completed its sixth year of programs and continues to grow in numbers and influence.

Over this year, Design West Engineering helped mentor students at both the Eisenhower and Santiago High School programs. Jeremy Richard, a mentor with the Eisenhower program shared,

“ACE is such a great program for giving back to the community, but even more, for steering the next generation of the best and brightest toward education and career choices that will benefit our industry for years to come. We need it!”

College of Engineering Onsite Department Training

College of Engineering Onsite Department Training

Ongoing education and team training is a top priority at Design West. We are continually working to increasing our expertise, methods of practice, and in house coordination. Each department at Design West meets up for biweekly training and we collaboratively work through ways to better our service and product.

This week, our Electrical Department took a field trip for some on-site training at the CBU School of Engineering. This new 105,000 SF classroom building is approaching completion this Summer and should be ready for the Fall semester students. At this stage of construction, our on-site training allowed our Electrical Drafters, Designers, and Managers alike to collectively review the installations of our own design drawings. This “in the field” review is always beneficial for teaching the real world practicality of what we put on paper.

CBU Dedicates College of Health Science

CBU Dedicates College of Health Science

Today we celebrated with California Baptist University as they dedicated the opening of the new campus for their College of Health Science which will dramatically increase the university's capacity to serve and educate students pursuing careers as healthcare providers.

This project began when CBU acquired the existing 62,000 square foot Riverside Christian School campus.  Design West Engineering worked closely with HMC Architects and Tovey Shultz Construction in designing all MEP systems to completely transform this K-12 campus into a functioning arm of the University.  Beyond standard classrooms, lecture halls, offices, and student dining facilities, the College of Health Science also incorporated many specialized education environments including mock exam and clinic rooms as well as a climate simulation chamber for athletic training.

Dr. Charles Sands, Provost and Professor of Health Science, said these new spaces "will serve as a place for students to come, be nurtured, and to grow in learning how to serve others in the community."

MSA STEAM School Wins AIAOC Citation Award

MSA STEAM School Wins AIAOC Citation Award

The MSA STEAM School just received a Citation Award through the 2017 AIAOC Orange County's Design Awards. This project was the only K-12 school that won an award.

The jury admired how much the project accomplished with a whole set of constraints, including budget and program. The clever use of color to differentiate space was very successful and they noted how the double loaded corridor plan was used to an advantage, creating opportunities for relief along the length of the plan. The jury felt that elevating design for these kinds of projects is important to our profession, and to society as a whole.

Congrats to Berliner Architects and the rest of our collective design team on receipt of this 2017 AIAOC Design Award!

2017 Company Picnic at Universal Studios

The Design West team is more than a collection of engineers, project managers and staff. We really are like a family, many of us have been working together for years. Every year we love to get together with our families and just have fun.

This year was no different and we all headed to Universal Studios. There were lots of raffle prizes and giveaways but Lonnie Butler and Eric Lotshaw were our big winners who each took home a $500 gift card!

The strength of the Design West is in our team – not just in our skills, but in our relationships. Great work doesn't happen by accident. Our team is as meticulously cared for as each of the designs we deliver to our clients.

UC Riverside Announces Solar-Powered Greenhouse

UC Riverside Announces Solar-Powered Greenhouse

UC Riverside is building a greenhouse with a translucent roof that generates solar power while allowing sunlight to pass through to plants below.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports that the greenhouse will serve as a laboratory to probe solar energy production, plant growth and costs of growing food in such systems.

The solar panels, whose technology was developed at UC Santa Cruz,  will charge a battery in the 800-square-foot greenhouse which will create and store all the electricity the building needs without a connection to the campus electricity network.

We designed and engineered the solar photovoltaic systems, including specification for the battery system and metering instrumentation. We also provided off-grid lighting and exhaust powered by the solar panels and batteries.

We are excited to see our work with UC Riverside come to life in the coming months.
